Yes, she really loved that cow, you think she didn't?
How she wept when they took it away, tried to give her that doll to replace it.
Imagine, a doll for a cow! Who woulda believed it?
She slept out in the barn for weeks afterward, I don't even know how long, never saw such a pitiful sight. Empty of hay, empty of feed, of feeling.
They tried to get her out of that barn, tried sweets and other swell things to tempt her out.
I mentioned that doll didn't I?
Nothing worked, she wouldn't leave it.
Could hear her screaming when they finally had to drag her off. And I mean dragged.
Well no clean clothes or food and sleepin' in a cow barn for weeks, what do you expect?
A fancy princess bed and a tutu?! A lollipop maybe?
So they hauled her off, she yelling and weeping and hollering the name of that cow to the high winds, which o' course took her words and whirled 'em away.
They never kept no cows ever after.
Can't say we were sorry about that, especially after everything that happened.
No pleasure in witnessing misery, none at all.
Yes. She really loved that cow.

In the Morning
I love the mornings, I just do, they're ever so much better than the afternoons or even the evenings! Even when they're sweet and cool.
Everything seems brighter, and cleaner, and it's like.........
......it's like there's more of a chance for things to go right, do you know what I mean?
I pull the water from the well, I feed the chickens, I collect the eggs.
Water the garden, you know those vegetables get really thirsty.
Later is when the other starts.
The other.........yes.
That's usually after dark.
But the mornings are all mine, just like the flowers and the sunrise, they're mine too. Sometimes I even watch it from my window, I know they don't want me too! I, well, I pretend sometimes that I am going to ride away and never ever come back, I'll just go off and disappear into the sun. Do you think that could happen?
Maybe when them others show up that night they'll look for me in my room and I just won't be there. I just won't!
Wouldn't that be something.
Well.....
Anyways the mornings are nice, and there'll always be another one of them.
Tomorrow's not that far away.

Fire vs. Water
"I'm the devil, you know," she whispered into his ear.
He laughed. "Hahaha! I could be so lucky," he said.
The heavens they cried while the lake waters roiled.
The sun burned in the sky and baked solid the earth.
And she held him close, and he breathed her in.
Until the world fell away and the pit of fire threatened to open up and swallow them both.
Is love a net?
Does it have a trap door?
Will the angels sing as it opens and you fall?
The fire will singe but the water, it will cool,
all.

End of Me
I lived amongst the pines for many a year until I died.
Right there! is where it happened.
Squashed flat by a railroad engine. Can you beat that?
No, didn't hurt, much. Seemed to happen pretty quick.
Left this old body behind soon afterward.
Nowadays the grass is still brownish and the pines smell as sweet as they ever did.
But I just don't get it.
How can a all these things continue on when I'm not here in a body to witness em?
I puzzle this out daily, not much better to do.
No whitlin' or smokin' no more.
Can still smell them pines, tho.

Out Here
I am living outside it all.
If my various transgressions hadn't been enough to made me an outcast, my lack of breast milk was.
At least that is what He tells me.
I live under the sky now, in the hedges and along the highways.
The air sometimes it caresses me, other times it whips and scorns.
Greens are plentiful, although slightly dusty.
Nuts fall, as if delivered by angels.
I have a knife with which I stalk small prey. I am getting better at it!
(Rat tastes very similar to tuna, I never knew that)
I wear spider webs as jewelry, wildflowers in my tangled hair.
I wouldn't have done anything differently, even if i did know the outcome beforehand!
Out here I am free of your bounds, I can make any choice that I choose. No repercussions, what else can you do to me? Only the birds can mock me now!
But, no, I lie. Do you know it? You see me, still lurking around your edges, still sniffing for a whiff of empathy. Let me in, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!
But, silence; only the air answers back.

They're Poisoning The Squirrels, Again
Where do you go when you dream?
Or:
You're lying in corpse pose, where are you now?
Or:
You're lying on a bed of moss, deep within the forest.
Your mind; ranging, far off, wandering.
Your body; still, relaxed, gurgling.
And now the breathing:
in and out, as easy as it was___ years ago when you were just a ____
no thinking no planning, it just is.
So are you flying?
Conversing with Gods?
Telling the Truth?
I speak in symbols to you - read my meanings in between the words.

They Drugged Her
When she wasn't wandering around the town, she was standing in that one place outside the saloon, warm urine running down her legs.
I'm old too now you know!
It wasn't always this way! Lord.
Yes, her parents died and she was young and on her own, what was she supposed to do?
But it was that boyfriend, he kept giving her them drugs. And she liked em!
I don't know, maybe if they hadn't a drugged her, she might've taken an interest in life and tried to pull herself out of her miserable condition and make something of her life!
It was them drugs!
Used to be known for her multiplication skills, she did math tricks and such for drinks! it was a hoot.
Now look at her.
I talked to her once, yes.
We passed in the thorough fare and she dropped her handkerchief that had been tucked into her skirt or someplace. I picked it up, said Ma'am? and she turned. Looked me square in the eye, said Thank you.
Thank YOU.
What color?
Hmm Green?
PIERCIN' gaze, felt it seared my brain.
She seemed to age fast all of sudden, I guess we all did. But i can remember when she....
you know....
